Marie Kondo, who? And what is the KonMari Method?

Simply put, Marie Kondo is a delightfully petite, organizing powerhouse originally from Japan, who is rapidly becoming a household name thanks to her self-developed tidying method aptly called the KonMari Method® (Marie-Kondo → Kon__-Mari_ see what she did there?)
Marie has authored several books, including a children’s book to sow the seeds of tidying early. She has an Emmy winning tv series on Netflix. She also initiated a rigorous consultant certification program to train organizers in her method so that they can carry on her legacy to Organize the World™.
So how does the KonMari Method® work?
Unlike other traditional organizing methods, her method encourages tidying by category, not by location, beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and finally, sentimental items.
“Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.”
-Marie Kondo
There are 6 essential rules to her method.
- Commit yourself to tidying up.
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
- Finish discarding first.
- Tidy by category, not by location.
- Follow the right order.
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy.
